Five members of the Harlan County High School tennis team earned medalists honors at the 13th Region Tournament at North Laurel High School.
Kalista Dunn and Sophie Day made it to the quarterfinals in doubles, as did Jason Maggard and Josh Stewart. Calan Neely made it to the quarterinals in singles. All five fell one round short of qualifying for state competition.
“We had a few matches that were very close to sending some players to state, and we are a young team. The future is bright with some incoming seventh graders next year and the returning core of sophomores,” Harlan County coach Caleb Bailey said. “My heart breaks for the seniors, but to go down with the fight we did is a great way to end the story against some great talent. I couldn’t be more proud of our team for the fight we had and results we produced.”
Neely won the 13th Region sportsmanship award.
“We produced really good results this past week at the 13th Regional Tournament to close our season. This is the most we have sent to the quarterfinals and most medals we have received,” Bailey said. “Calan Neely won our second 13th Region KHSAA sportsmanship award, following Lindsay Hall last year, which is a great accomplishment for this young man.”
