Facing a top 10 team in preseason 11th Region polls, the Harlan County Lady Bears traveled to Scott County on Saturday for their opening scrimmage.
Freshman guard Jaylee Cochran scored 14 points to lead the Lady Bears in a 54-42 loss.
HCHS stayed close for a half, trailing 15-12 after one quarter and 29-23 after two. The Lady Bears were limited to four points in the third period and trailed by 13. Lauren Lewis scored all six of her points in the final period as Harlan County won the quarter 15-14.
Harlan County fell 31-27 in junior varsity action in a scrimmage that lasted three quarters.
Taylynn Napier scored 10 of her team-leading 12 points in the third quarter. Jaycee Simpson, Kenadee Sturgill and Raegan Landa scored four each. Kelsie Middleton added three points.
The Lady Bears won 9-4 in a freshman game of one quarter. Jayla Dillman scored five to lead HCHS. Carmen Thomas sand Khloe Carr added two each.
Harlan County will play its second scrimmage on Monday at home against defending 13th Region champ North Laurel.
