The Pineville Mountain Lions overcame a halftime deficit to rally for a 59-53 victory over 11th Region foe Model in the opening game of the Jersey Mike Classic held at Great Crossing High School Saturday.
Pineville (1-0) was led by Sawyer Thompson’s 25 points. Ashton Moser posted a double double with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
The 0-2 Patriots were led by Landon Kidd with 21 points. Riley Mollette added 20.
The Patriots controlled much of the first half, leading 20-11 after one period and 30-27 at the half. In the third quarter, the Lions trailed 42-40, but outscored Model 19-11 in the final frame to pick up the hard fought victory.
The Lions will play Tuesday night in the opening round of the WYMT Mountain Classic at Perry Central against 14th Region power Breathitt County. Tip time is set for 8 pm.
