Down by seven at halftime against Lloyd Memorial, the state’s second-ranked team in the most recent KSR poll, the Harlan County Black Bears showed some of the same mental toughness that helped them win a 13th Region title last season.
With senior guard Maddox Huff scoring 23 of his game-high 33 points in the second half, the Black Bears rallied in the second half for a 67-58 win.
“We didn’t shoot the ball well the first half,” Harlan County coach Kyle Jones said. “People underestimate our toughness. We have tough kids who aren’t intimidated. They are battle tested and ready to play.”
Trent Cole and Brody Napier added 13 and 10 points, respectively, for the 8-2 Black Bears.
Anthony Blaackar, a junior guard, led the 7-2 Juggernauts with 17 points. Senior forward E.J. Walker, one of the state’s top ranked players, added 15.
Harlan County will play Ashland Blazer at 7 in the first semifinal on Friday. Danville Christian will play Fleming in the second semifinal. Lloyd Memorial will play Walton Verona and Rusell will take on Highlands in the consolation bracket.
