James A. Cawood rolled past Black Mountain 28-7 and Evarts edged Rosspoint 30-26 in the opening night of the county fifth- and sixth-grade tournament on Thursday at James A. Cawood Elementary School.
Tucker Daniels scored eight points and Logan Mills added six to lead the Trojans, who raced to 22-2 lead after one quarter.
Joe Cottrell paced Black Mountain with three points.
Aiden Napier poured in 20 points to lead Evarts.
Weston Nolan and Braxton Sage paced Rosspoint with six points each.
Evarts led by 10 in the fourth quarter before Rosspoint rallied to get as close as three in the closing seconds.
The first round continues Tuesday with Wallins playing Green Hills at 5:30 and Cawood taking on Cumberland at 6:30. The semifinals are set for Jan. 23 with the championship game scheduled Jan. 25
