When her teammates needed her most in last year’s 52nd District Tournament, first baseman Abbi Fields was at her best.
Fields helped lead Harlan to its first district softball championship in 20 years with two of the biggest games of her career last spring. Fields had two homers and a single in a 6-5 win in eight innings over Middlesboro, then added a two-run homer in a 4-3 win over Harlan County in the district finals.
Heading into her senior season, Fields made her college choice official Tuesday when she signed with Alice Lloyd College.
“Alice Lloyd is where I am going to college. It felt like home the coaches and staff made me feel welcomed, and I was already a part of the Eagle family,” Fields said.
Fields hit .321 as a junior last spring, with seven homers and 31 RBI along with 27 hits. She hit .377 as a sophomore with four homers and 26 RBI along with 29 hits.
“Abbi is another one who has been a vital part of our success,” Harlan coach David Overbay said. “She played her best ball towards the end of the season last year. I am so excited for her and her opportunity to play at the next level. Alice Lloyd is getting a great young lady who will contribute immediately.”
Fields’ father, Abe Fields Jr., died early in her high school career, and she said she dedicated her softball career to him.
“I promised my Dad before he passed away that I would continue my softball career and make him proud,” she said.
The Lady Dragons will bring back a senior-dominated squad this spring featuring catcher Addison Jackson, third baseman Ella Lisenbee, shortstop Ella Farley, outfielder Ava Nunez and Fields.
“Going into my senior season, I hope we leave a legacy that Harlan softball will always remember the class of 2025,” Fields said. “Our team has goals that we hope to fulfill this year. I would like to thank my Lord and Savior, my teammates, my coaches and my parents.”
