With a lineup featuring third baseman Ella Lisenbee, catcher Addison Jackson and first baseman Abbi Fields, the Harlan Lady Dragons have had no shortage of power the past several seasons. Even when they struggled to win games in 2022 and 2023, the Lady Dragons could always hit the long ball.
Harlan turned around its fortunes at midseason last year and carried that momentum into the postseason where they knocked off both Middlesboro and Harlan County to capture their first district softball championship in 20 years.
One big reason for the success was the steady play on both offense and defense by shortstop and leadoff hitter Ella Farley, who recently signed with the University of Pikeville.
Farley hit .364 last season with 36 hits and 38 runs scored. She was second on the team in stolen bases behind Lisenbee with 15 and also played a solid shortstop. She made the play of the year to end the district tournament when she threw out the potential tying run at the plate to close the game against HCHS.
“Ella has been a constant for our team and our success. She had a great year last year, and I know that she has worked hard through the summer and fall with her travel team, so I look forward to this season for her as well as moving on to the next level,” Harlan coach David Overbay said. “She, like Addi (Jackson) and Abbi (Fields) will be ready to contribute immediately in college. She is our spark, and a wonderful young lady on and off the field.”
With a senior-dominated squad returning, Farley is expected an even better season in 2025.
“Going into our senior season, we have high expectations for the team,” Farley said. “My teammates and I have a special bond that will be hard to leave behind, but I am excited for our season and to start my journey at the University of Pikeville.”
Farley said she felt comfortable with Pikeville during the recruiting process.
“The coaches and players at UPike were very welcoming and supportive, which made my decision easy during the recruiting process,” she said. “I am thankful for the opportunity to play under coach (Robert) Staggs and coach (April) Charles and look forward to their mentorship.”
The Lady Dragons open their 2025 schedule on March 17 at Claiborne, Tenn.
