Redskins open season with win
Cumberland opened the middle school baseball season Monday with a 19-3 win over Barbourville.
Tobey Lunsford and Byron Shepherd led the Redskins with two singles each. Dakota Smith and Brayan Perez added one double each. Balin Foutch had one single.
Lunsford struck out six in 2 2/3 innings on the mound. Robby Johnson fanned three in 1 1/3 innings.

Court Kings finished second in the sixth grade division goldbracket of Shooting Stars Tournament in Johnson City, Tenn., over the weekend. Court Kings place second
The Harlan County Heat, a local seventh-grade AAU team, won the 2025 Teammate Basketball's Hardwood Classic Tournament over the weekend in Gatlinburg. Teams from six states competed. Harlan County split two games in pool play, defeating the Tennessee Cougars 2030 63-15 and falling to North Alabama Lakers 36-34. The Heat defeated the Central (Va.) Warriors 63-22 in bracket play, then downed TMT Elite (Ga.) 35-32 in the semifinals before avenging their only loss with a 33-28 win over the North Alabama Lakers. Harlan County Heat capture tournament title in Gatlinburg
The Harlan Monarchs (sixth grade) won all five games over the weekend in the Hoops For Heroes Tournament at Berea. The Monarchs defeated North Laurel 29-14, Jackson County 23-20, Richmond Titans 28-3, Lincoln County 29-17 and Anderson County 19-7. Monarchs win tourney at Berea
Former Cawood all-stater Greg Coldiron, who later served as a high school basketball coach, was back in coaching this season as an assistant for the Wallins basketball teams led by his grandson, Treyce Spurlock, who starred at Harlan County High School and later played at Morehead. Coldiron was the first all-state player at Cawood High School and first Kentucky All Star from Cawood, both in 1978. He went on to play four seasons at Morehead State University, and then returned home to begin his coaching career. He was an assistant coach at Cawood under Mike Jones when the Trojans won a 52nd District Tournament title in 1986 and finished as 13th Region runner-up. He became the head coach at Cawood in the 1990 season and led the Trojans to district titles in 1991 and 1992. He later led Powell County to a 14th Region title. He was also a head coach at Maysville and Russell County.
