Strange honored at Sweet Sixteen by Kentucky Coaches Association
One of the most successful basketball coaches in 13th Region history, J.D. Strange was honored Thursday during the state tournament as the Kentucky High School Coaches Association representative Jeff Marksberry presented him with the Bob Miller Outstanding Service Award.
Now the athletic director at Pineville, Strange won 518 games in a career that included stops at Bell County, Allen County-Scottsville, Knox Central and Pineville.
His coaching career started in 1977 as an assistant at Campbellsville University for three years. In 1980, he became the head coach at Saint Catherine Junior College. He began his high school coaching career in 1984 at Bell County. Under his leadership, his Bobcats reached the 13th Region finals three times.
From 1993 to 1999, Coach Strange took over at Allen County-Scottsville where his 1996 team made history by capturing the 4th Region championship. After a year at Knox Central High School, he continued his mission at Pineville High School and led the Lions to four 13th Region All “A” Classic titles.
“I have been very fortunate to coach and work as AD this long,” Strange said. “Also, I have had the opportunity to be around some good players and people. I’m very thankful.”
