Harlan County native Mike Ashurst talked with Lawrence County coach Chandler during a break in the action Thursday at the state tournament at Rupp Arena. Ashurst has called eight boys state tournaments and two girls state tournaments during an officiating career that began in the 1970s.

Harlan County senior guard Maddox Huff was honored as the 13th Region Player of the Year on Friday at Rupp Arena during the quarterfinals of the state tournament. Huff averaged 29.4 points and 7.9 rebounds per game for the 25-9 Black Bears. Huff, an all-stater last season, helpled lead the Bears to a state runner-up finish in 2024 and closed his career as the third all-time scoring leader in county history behind only Charles Thomas and Trent Noah.

Pineville High School athletic director J.D. Strange was honored during halftime of the Breathitt County-North Laurel game in the state tournament at Rupp Arena. Strange received the Bob Miller Outstanding Service Award.
