With sophomore pitcher Alexis Adams temporarily sidelined with a leg injury, the Harlan County Lady Bears had some big performances in her place Tuesday in a 6-4 win at Knott Central.
Madison Blair, a senior who was the Lady Bears’ top pitcher until a hip injury forced her to give up pitching, stepped back in the circle for three innings against Knott as she gave up two earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts and no walks in three innings. Aly Sherman pitched four shutout innings in relief to earn the win, giving up two hits and two walks with four strikeouts.
Sherman also led Harlan County on offense with a double and two singles for two RBI. Aviya Halcomb also had two hits. Halanah Shepherd, Brayden Gilley, Blair and Jade Burton added one single each.
Harlan County fell 12-10 to Whitley County on Friday as the Lady Colonels rallied when Adams went out with the injury. Adams gave up three runs (two earned) on five hits with eight strikeouts and three walks in 3 1/3 innings. Sherman allowed nine runs (eight earned) on seven hits with two strikeouts and five walks in 3 2/3 innings.
Sherman led on offense with two singles. Burton, Shepherd, Kendall Brock and Halcomb added one single each. Brock drove in three runs, and Halcomb drove in two.
The 4-3 Lady Bears play at Clay County on Friday and play host to Hazard on Saturday at 2 before traveling to Pigeon Forge, Tenn., during spring break.
