Maddox Huff added two more honors to a high school basketball resume that places him among the county’s all-time greats as a first-team selection on both the Lexington Herald and Louisville Courier Journal all-state teams announced on Thursday.
Huff averaged 29.4 points and 7.9 rebounds per game last season, earning 13th Region Player of the Year honors by the Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches, as he led the Bears to a 25-9 record and third straight 52nd District title. Huff was a second-team all-state selection with the Herald Leader and third-team all-state selection in the Courier Journal last year as he averaged 17.7 points and 8.3 rebounds per game on a 13th Region championship squad that advanced to the state finals before falling to Lyon County. Huff ranked third on the Herald Leader team, behind only Great Crossing’s Malachi Moreno and Ashland’s Zander Carter. He was fourth on the Courier Journal list, where he switched spots with Butler County’s Ty Price.
As a five-year player at HCHS, ended his high school career as the third leading scorer in county history with 2,721 points, trailing only Trent Noah and Charles Thomas. He is second on the school scoring list behind only Noah, who was his teammate for four years and is also his cousin. He led the state this year with 151 3-pointers, shooting 43.4 percent.
Huff, who has a 4.0 grade point average and scored a 27 on the ACT, will continue his academic and athletic career at East Tennessee State University.
“We feel Maddox is one of the top five players in Kentucky. He has a lot of game experience, and we’re looking for him to take on an even bigger leadership role this year,” Harlan County coach Kyle Jones said. “He does everything right — the way he approaches basketball and the way he approaches school. He sets a great example for our younger kids.”
