Harlan County senior guard Maddox Huff has made a habit of making history during his high school basketball career as a two-time all-stater and key member of the Bears’ state runner-up team in 2024.
He added another honor with his selection to the Kentucky All-Star team that will take on Indiana in a two-game series this summer.
Huff averaged 29.4 points and 7.9 rebounds per game last season, earning 13th Region Player of the Year honors by the Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches, as he led the Bears to a 25-9 record and third straight 52nd District title. Huff was a second-team all-state selection with the Herald Leader and third-team all-state selection in the Courier Journal last year as he averaged 17.7 points and 8.3 rebounds per game on a 13th Region championship squad that advanced to the state finals before falling to Lyon County. Huff ranked third on the Herald Leader team, behind only Great Crossing’s Malachi Moreno and Ashland’s Zander Carter. He was fourth on the Courier Journal list, where he switched spots with Butler County’s Ty Price.
As a five-year player at HCHS, ended his high school career as the third leading scorer in county history with 2,721 points, trailing only Trent Noah and Charle Thomas. He is second on the school scoring list behind only Noah, who was his teammate for four years and is also his cousin. He led the state this year with 151 3-pointers, shooting 43.4 percent.
Huff, who has a 4.0 grade point average and scored a 27 on the ACT, will continue his academic and athletic career at East Tennessee State University.
Current University of Kentucky player Trent Noah was unable to play in the Kentucky-Indiana games last summer due to prior commitments with college basketball, so Huff will be the first HCHS player to participate in the series and the first from Harlan County since Cumberland’s Desmond Johnson in 2008. Cawood’s Greg Coldiron was the first Harlan Countian to play in the series in 1978, followed by Phil Cox in 1981 and Nick Sanford in 1986. Both Cox and Sanford were Cawood graduates. Harlan’s Charles Thomas and Todd Cox made the team in 1995.
