When he joined the first esports teams as a freshman in the fall of 2021, Hunter Lawson was part of history.
When he signed with Mars Hill University (N.C.) on Wednesday, Lawson made history as the first HCHS student to sign with a college for esports.
“While I got offers from about 10 different schools, when I first looked at Mars Hill’s website, I saw they were Christian-based and had a church on campus,” Lawson said. “I thought it was great, and since I got an offer, I figured I would tour the campus. As I toured, I saw how wonderful the staff was and how clean everything was, and I was basically hooked from then on.”
Lawson played on the Super Smash Brothers and League of Legends teams at HCHS.
“I started playing because I’ve always loved to play video games since I was little,” he said. “I had a Nintendo DS in my hand for as long as I can remember. “
Lawson, who has a 3.5 grade point average, plans to major in computer science at Mars Hill.
