Harlan County Public Schools Middle and Elementary Schools’ Soccer Leagues ended their regular season Tuesday. The end of year tournament begins Tuesday and a lot can be said about each team entering the tournament.
In the elementary division, James A. Cawood enters as the first seed holding a record of 4-0-2. The two draws were against Wallins and Evarts, but JACES did defeat each team once. This definitely makes for a very competitive field in the elementary division. Wallins enters the tournament as the second seed with a record of 3-2-1. The third seed is Evarts, holding a record of 2-2-2. Interestingly, Wallins and Evarts both hold a 1-1 record with each other. The fourth seed is Black Mountain, holding a record of 0-5-1. Their lone tie was against Evarts. Summing up the season, no score margin was greater than three goals over an opponent, which makes the first year of elementary tournament anyone’s trophy. A notable achievement is that Wallins was able to finish as the leading scoring team with nine goals this season, James A. Cawood had seven goals. Evarts finished with five goals on the season. Black Mountain did not manage to score any goals this season.
In the middle school division, Wallins was a clear top seed, with a 10-0-0 record this season. Seven of those 10 games ended early due to the mercy rule taking effect, meaning Wallins scored eight or more points over their opponent. This dominating performance this season, scoring a total of 78 goals, has them viewed as the expected champions for the tournament. Evarts, holding a record of 7-3-0 this season, is the second seed. The only other loss besides to Wallins was against James A. Cawood by one goal. In their win over JACES, Evarts won by two goals. In the season, Evarts scored a total of 44 goals. James A. Cawood, recording 6-4-0, had an early loss to Cumberland, but played at a higher caliber towards the end of the season. JACES scored a total 28 goals this season, with the bulk of those goals happening towards the end of the regular season. Cumberland comes into the tournament as the fourth seed, holding a record of 3-5-2. Being a combined fourth through eighth-grade team in the middle school division, they have fared very well. With the early season win over JACES, they show potential to be competitive in the tournament. Black Mountain Elementary is the fifth seed, managing a 2-6-2 record. With half their losses being small margins, Black Mountain shows potential to also be competitive come tournament time. Rosspoint, with a 0-0-10 record, came into the season rebuilding, after making upsets in the tournament last year for a top four finish. Along with Cumberland, they also combined fourth through eighth grade to manage a middle school team this year.
