James A. Cawood defeated Black Mountain 2-0 in the first round of the elementary school soccer tournament. Black Mountain came in strong the first half, keeping JACES from scoring and moving the ball within striking distance more consistently than they had all season. JACES answered the pressure in the second half behind Carson Kazy who scored two goals at 13:14 and 10:51 respectively. The win puts the number one seed Trojans in the championship match this Thursday.
Cumberland cruised to a 5-0 win over Black Mountain in the first round of the middle school soccer tournament. What was anticipated as a highly competitive match coming off a double draw series from the regular season, started out as such as the match was scoreless the first half, but ended up a dominating performance by Cumberland in the second half. Zack Smith opened up the scoring for Cumberland at 25:08 for his first goal on the evening. Smith hit the net again at the 21:21 mark. In a spectacular play around the 17:43 mark, Jake Cornett kicked the ball, which deflected off Smith’s knee for another goal for Smith. Cornett found his own goal at the 10:34 mark. Smith earned his fourth goal with only 24 second remaining in regulation. The win over the Black Mountain Tigers advances the Cumberland Redskins to the semifinal round where they will be taking on the number one seed Wallins Purple Devils this Thursday.
Evarts upset second seed Wallins by a score of 1-0. The anticipated competitiveness of this matchup did not disappoint. Neither team managed to score during the first half as strong defense on both ends of the field kept the ball away from the goal. Jesse Sergent found some room in the second half with 8:41 remaining on the clock to put Evarts up 1-0.
James A. Cawood enforced a late mercy rule against Rosspoint in the first round, winning 8-0. Joe Wright opened up the scoring with a powerful shot at 24:16 in the first half. Avan Middleton finessed his way for a hat trick, scoring the next three goals for James A. Cawood, at 17:21, 15:16, and 5:59. Wright scored the final goal of the first half with 3:04 remaining. Carson Kazy opened up the scoring in the second half at the 17:02 mark. The score would be left unchanged until Wright managed a hat trick for himself, scoring his third goal with 3:02 to play. As the clock wound down, 41 second remained and Hailey Collins chipped in the final shot to end the game by way of mercy. The first round victory will have James A. Cawood taking on Evarts as the second seed in the semifinal round Thursday.
