The Harlan County Lady Bears opened the season with a 4-1 win Thursday at Hazard.
The HCHS midfielders controlled the pace of the game early, providing countless opportunities for the forwards to pressure Hazard’s defense. The first half featured goals from Harlan County’s Rileigh Duff and Makenna Dillman.
In the second half, the Lady Bears continued their offensive efforts, adding two more goals, one each by freshmen Anessa Carroll and Brianna Barret.
Hazard managed to put back a goal of its own, but Harlan County goalkeeper Brooklyn Haywood, a freshman, stayed strong and resilient and didn’t allow another goal.
“It was a great first look for our season,” Harlan County coach Kenzie Crider said. “I have many young girls coming out, putting in the time and effort. Despite the loses we have had with losing big parts of our team we circled back even better. It was a great night full of courage, determination, and winning. We are super proud of these girls and their dedication to the team.”
The 1-0 Lady Bears play Whitley County on Monday at Knox Central in the 2A Section 7 Tournament.
