Second a year ago in the Pine Mountain Golf Conference Tournament, Harlan County junior Cole Cornett took the next step this week as he shot a four-over par 76 to take first in this year’s event. The two-day tournament ended Wednesday at the Wasioto Winds course.
Cornett shot a one-under par 35 on Tuesday before following with a 41 on Wednesday to defeat Barbourville’s Samuel Collins by two strokes.
It was the third straight individual title for Harlan County as Brayden Casolari won the conference championship the past two years.
“I’m proud of Cole today. He played a solid round of golf yesterday to put himself in first going into today. He would be the first to say that he had some bad swings today, but he was able to deal with those issues in the middle of his round, and it shows how much his game has grown over the year,” Harlan County coach Brendan Rutherford said. “I’m also proud of Carson (Clark) in how he’s improved over the season. Next year will be a big year for him. Sebastian (Mosley) is also working to improve his game, and I expect a big year from him as well for his senior year. My two seventh graders — Mason (Garrett) and Jonah (Estep) — have been thrown into the middle of all of it, and the way they have responded in these moments I couldn’t be more proud. Harlan County golf is in a great place going into the postseason and even better going into next year.”
