Burkhart, last basketball coach at Black Star and Hall, dies at 87

James Burkhart was the last basketball coach at both Black Star and Hall high schools.

James Burkhart, the last basketball coach at both Black Star and Hall high schools, died on Friday at Harlan ARH.
Burkhart was a retired school teacher, having taught for 31 years with the Harlan County Board of Education. He has served as the pastor of the Ages Baptist Church for 30 years.
Burkhart’s son, Bucky, was the girls basketball coach at Cawood High School for 11 years and led the Trojanettes to four district championships from 2001 to 2004. He coached track at Harlan County HIgh School.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday at Anderson-Laws & Jones Funeral Home.
