Lady Cats roll past Black Mountain for 7-8 county title

Up by only one point after one quarter in the seventh- and eighth-grade county championship game Thursday against BlacK Mountain, the Rosspoint Lady Cats took control with the attacking defense that has helped them win 17 of 18 games this season.
Rosspoint took a 26-18 halftime lead, then blew the game open with an 18-2 run in the third quarter on the way to a 50-30 win at Harlan County High School.
“Black Mountain was hitting everything early and I told our girls they had to dig in and keep putting pressure on them,” Rosspoint coach Rob McHargue said. “All of our girls played excellent ball. They have all season. This is the most solid group I’ve ever had. They are hard workers and really love the game.”
Sixth-grade guard Reagan Clem scored 20 points to lead the 17-1 Lady Cats, who suffered their only loss against Whitesburg but came back to win at home over the Lady Jackets later in the season. Emmalyn Branson added 10 points, followed by Shasta Brackett with nine and Jaylee Cochran with eight.
Brianna Vick and Maddie Bennett scored 10 points each to lead the 14-5 Tigerettes.
Black Mountain scored the game’s first five points before Rosspoint battled back to a 6-6 tie. The lead changed hands four times before the Lady Cats took a 14-13 lead going into the second period. The lead grew to eight by halftime and 24 by then end of the third period.

Addison Day scored 12 points to lead Wallins to a 40-32 win over James A. Cawood in the third-place game, Raegan Landa added eight points for the 12-5 Lady Devils.
Carmen Thomas scored nine and Lia Kate Carter added eight for the 7-11 Trojanettes.
