Newport knocks off Black Bears in Ed Stepp Classic

Harlan County guard Maddox Huff, pictured in action Friday against Pulaski County, scored 21 points in the Bears’ loss Saturday to Newport.

After hard-fought wins the previous two nights over Harlan and Pulaski County, the Harlan County Black Bears weren’t able to make it three in.a row in a road trip to Woodford County on Saturday to play Newport in the Ed Stepp Classic.
Newport pulled away in the second half for a 73-58 victory that ended the Bears’ three-game winning streak.
Marquez Miler scored 21 points to lead Newport. Taylor Kinney scored 18.
Trent Noah scored 22 points and Maddox Huff added 21 for the 20-5 Bears. Harlan County played without junior guard Jonah Sswanner due to an injury suffered in the win over Pulaski County on Friday.
After playing to a 16-16 tie after one quarter, Newport used a run late in the half to take a 32-27 lead into the break. Newport outscored the Bears by five in both the third and fourth quarters.
Harlan County will play host to Harlan on Tuesday in a district doubleheader.
