Harlan coach Derrick Akal was honored in ceremonies Friday afternoon at Rupp Arena as the KABC Coach of the Year for the 13th Region after leading the Green Dragons to a 24-8 record this season. Akal has posted a 115-90 record in seven seasons, leading Harlan to four straight regional All “A” Classic titles and seven straight appearances in the 13th Region Tournament. Akal posted a 149-76 record in seven years as girls coach with two 13th Region championships and two runner-up finishes. He has a 264-176 record combined in 13 years at Harlan.
