Members of the final Lynch High School basketball team of 1981 were in attendance at the Harlan/Harlan County basketball game recently at Harlan County High School. Harlan coach Derrick Akal was a freshman on the team. Team members included, from left, front row: Donnie Wilkerson, Harden Peeples, Bruce Crosby and Akal; back row: Richard Washington and Bruce Mitchell. Lynch defeated Cumberland in the 52nd District Tournament and lost to Cawood and Mr. Basketball Phil Cox in the finals. Lynch fell to Clay County 78-58 in the first round of the 13th Region Tournament in 1981 at Knox Central, the last basketball game ever played by the Bulldogs. Mitchell was an all-state guard on the 1981 team and went on to sign with Eastern Kentucky University. Washington and Akal went on to play on the district championship team at Cumberland High School in 1984 and then played college basketball at Tennessee Wesleyan.
