HCHS boys take second in Williamsburg meet
April 16, 2023
The Harlan County boys placed second and the girls were fourth on Friday in an all-comers meet at Williamsburg.
“Proud of our kids tonight. Again, another huge meet in terms of field size and talent, which will serve us well in prepping for the regional meet,” Harlan County coach Ryan Vitatoe said. “Coming out of here with so many PRs and top five finishes says a lot about how hard they competed.”
To lead the Bears, Dallas Sergent was first in the 110-meter hurdles and second in the 300-meter hurdles. Landon McCreary and Jayce Brown won pole vault. Connor Blevins placed first in shot put and third in discus.
Luke Kelly placed second in the 100-meter dash and third in the 200-meter dash.
Andrew Yeary finished second in the 800-meter run.
Tanner Daniels placed second in the 3,200-meter run.
Hunter Crain, Kelly, Taelor Haywood and Dallas Sergent finished third in the 4 x 100 meter relay.
Hunter Crain, Austin Crain, Kelly and Dallas Sergent were fourth in the 4 x 200 meter relay.
Austin Crain, Hunter Crain, Jacob Schwenke and Yeary were third in the 4 x 400 meter relay.
Luther Gross, Drew Sergent, Gage Bailey and Caleb Schwenke finished fourth in the 4 x 800 meter relay.
Austin Crain, Yeary, Jacob Schwenke and Kyle Farley placed third in the 4 x 800 meter relay.
“The boys also competed great. We still are struggling to get healthy, but I really liked their effort,” Vitatoe said. “A top two finish against this field is a great performance, and I’m proud of them.”
Taytum Griffin, Emilee Eldridge, Aliyah Deleon and Ella Karst finished second overall in the 4 x 100 meter relay to lead the Lady Bears.
Karst was fourth in the 100-meter dash.
Paige Phillips placed third in the 100-and 300-meter hurdles.
Phillips and Maddi Middleton were third in high jump.
Peyton Lunsford finished fourth in the 1,600-meter run.
Lauren Lewis was fifth in the 3,200-meter run.
Taylor Lunsford placed fourth in shot put and fifth in discus.
Addi Gray, Preslee Hensley, Peyton Lunsford and Lewis finished fifth in the 4 x 800 meter relay.
“The girls were very solid tonight. We had some great finishes, and I felt like they competed hard,” Vitatoe said. “We have to keep our eyes forward toward the end goal, but there was a lot of bright spots in this meet. A top four finish in this field of teams shows how hard they competed.
“We are seeing multiple PRs across both teams. As a coach, I couldn’t be happier. These kids deserve to see improvement from their hard work. There’s no easy days in this program and in the region we compete in. We train to compete every day, and I’m proud of where we are. We definitely have work to do, but the ceiling for both of these teams are high. We have to stay positive, focused, and engaged.”
HC will return to action Tuesday for an all-comers meet at North Laurel and will be at home Friday.
