One day after watching Knox Central score six runs in the second inning to beat them 11-6, the Harlan Green Dragons put together a six-run third inning to take control on the way to a 9-3 victory Friday over visiting Williamsburg.
“It was good to get a win tonight. Going down 3-0 in the bottom of the third, it was gut-check time. The boys responded well,” Harlan coach Lee Freyer said. “Coach Hopkins has a really good team down at Williamsburg. It’s just shows what this bunch is capable of when the concentrate and play together.”
Three Harlan pitchers teamed on a two-hitter. Eli Freyer allowed three runs (two earned) in three innings, with four walks. Jake Brewer pitched one shutout inning and allowed one hit and one walk. Baylor Varner earned a rare three-inning save, giving up one hit and one walk.
“I had no idea we threw a two hitter,” Freyer said. “It was good to see us compete on the mound. Still more walks than I would like to see, but we also had an inning or two of less than 10 pitches.”
Jared Moore hit his first homer of the season and added a single to lead the 9-10 Green Dragons. Jaedyn Gist and Varner added doubles. Chris Rouse contributed two singles. Brewer, Matthew Nunez and Aiden Johnson added singles.
“Stacks (Jared Moore) finally got him one,” Freyer said. “He’s been launching them in batting practice. It’s great to see him get one in a big game. He’s a hard working kid, and that homer was well deserved. We still haven’t put together a complete game yet, so there’s still some work to do.”
The Dragons return to action Monday at home against Bell County.
