Bears claim walkoff win over Redskins on Stewart’s sacrifice fly

Two Harlan County middle school baseball nearing the end of outstanding seasons played a thriller Tuesday as Harlan County rallied with two runs in the sixth inning to edge Cumberland 3-2 at the Harlan County High School field.
Brayden Morris started the comeback by reaching base on an error. He then stole second and took third on Colby Shepherd’s bunt single. After Shepherd stole second, Jesse Gilbert was walked intentionally to load the bases. Bryson Kelly singled home the tying run, then Ethan Stewart won the game with a sacrifice fly to center to bring home Shepherd.
Gilbert pitched a complete game to earn the win, striking out six and walking none,.
Cumberland’s Zayden Casolari was also outstanding on the mound as he gave up only one earned run in a complete-game effort while striking out five.
Kayden Adams led the Cumberland offense with a double and single. Carson Clark singled twice. Braxton Bowen, Casolari and Gavvin Lloyd added one single each.
Gilbert had a double for the Bears. Morris, Kelly and Shepherd added singles.
Harlan County (12-6) closes its season next week against Leslie County. The 9-3 Redskins end their season Saturday at Williamsburg.

Redskins split doubleheader at Williamsburg to close season

Cumberland closed its season Saturday with a doubleheader split at Williamsburg to finish 10-4.
Braxton Bowen led the Skins in a 13-3 win in the opening game with a triple and double. Brayden Howard added a double and single. Hayden Cornett, Carson Clark and Kyllian Jackson had two singles each. Gavvin Lloyd contributed a double.
Bowen struck out three in four innings on the mound;.
Howard and Cornett had singles as the Redskins fell 3-1 in the second game. Jackson pitched 2 2/3 innings. Kayden Adams struck out two in 2 1/3 innings. Clark fanned two in one inning.
