Members of the Harlan County volleyball team had fun during a break in their three-set win Monday over Pineville. Team members Kylee Hoiska, Savannah Hill, Kalista Dunn, Rileigh Duff and Destiny Cornett danced to “YMCA” during a timeout late in the match.

Harlan County senior guard Maddox Huff was honored as the 13th Region Player of the Year on Friday at Rupp Arena during the quarterfinals of the state tournament. Huff averaged 29.4 points and 7.9 rebounds per game for the 25-9 Black Bears. Huff, an all-stater last season, helpled lead the Bears to a state runner-up finish in 2024 and closed his career as the third all-time scoring leader in county history behind only Charles Thomas and Trent Noah.

Harlan native Neil Middleton was honored during halftime of the Breathitt County-North Laurel game at the Sweet SIxteen on Thursday at Rupp Arena. Middleton, a 1978 Harlan High School graduate, worked in radio in Harlan at WTUK and WHLN before moving to WYMT in Hazard, where he spent 12 years as vice president and general manager. He was presented the NFHS Award for Outstanding Service by Kentucky High School Athletic Association Commissioner Julian Tackett.
