A record-breaking night from senior Victoria Day and a dominating defensive effort sent the Harlan County Lady Bears to a 10-0 victory Tuesday over visiting Knox Central.
Day set a school record by scoring eight of the Lady Bears’ 10 goals. Callie Smith and Holly Wright added one goal each. Aliya Burkhart led HC in assists with four. Wright, Braelyn Langley and Smith had one each.
“We played an excellent game last night. Our passing has come a long way since the start of the season and that was evident by the number of assisted goals we were able to score,” Harlan County coach Hannah Pittman said. “All eyes were on senior Tori Day, who broke the record for most goals scored in a single game, but what doesn’t show up on the stat sheet is the effort her teammates put in that allowed her the opportunity to score those goals. Aliya Burkhart also had a huge game for us, as she assisted on nearly half our made shots and held down our midfield.”
Madison Miles recorded three goal keeper saves as Harlan County posted its first shutout of the season.
“Madison gave us great minutes in goal, along with Willow Peace. Thanks to their efforts we were able to secure our first shutout of the season,” Pittman said.
The 2-2 Lady Bears return to action Monday at home against Whitley County.
