Led by 20 points from junior Keevi Betts and 13 from Millie Roberts, Middlesboro opened the 2023-2024 season in impressive fashion with a 47-32 win over visiting Lynn Camp.
Roberts had five points and Trinity Derossett added three as Middlesboro took a 10-5 lead after one quarter. Betts scored four and Roberts added three in the second period as the lead grew to 19-12 at the break. Betts took over in the third quarter with six points as the Lady Jackets outscored Lynn Camp 12-6. Betts had 10 points in the fourth quarter as Middlesboro outscored the Lady Cats 16-4.
“We played under the pressure of a lot of foul trouble, but the girls still found a way to stay mentally tough and win the game,” Middlesboro coach Sally Adams said. “We were messy on a few possessions, but we slowed down the ball game and ran our plays. I’m very proud of the girls for the defense in the second half. We put a lot of pressure on them to shoot the outside shot, which created some rebounding opportunities for us.”
The Lady Jackets return to action on Thursday at Thomas Walker, Va.
