LONDON — A rough second quarter put the Harlan Lady Dragons behind Saturday afternoon in the Lisa Collins Classic at South Laurel against Wayne County. They spent the entire second half battling back, getting within a basket several times down the stretch before falling 63-60 in Mackenzie King Varner’s debut as coach.
Sisters Kelci and Cami DeBord scored 21 and 18 points, respectively, to lead the 2-0 Lady Cardinals. Adeline Heatherly added 11 points.
Harlan (0-1) placed four in double figures, led by junior guard Aymanni Wynn with 30 points. Kylie Noe scored 15, including 11 in the final period as the Lady Dragons rallied. Emma Owens chipped in with 10 points.
“I think we played a solid four quarters,” Varner said. “We have to be able to play all four quarters, and I thought we did that. Kylie stepped up when we needed her. Aymanni hit some big 3s when we needed them. We got down in the first half and fought back, but we fell a little short. I was proud of how they played together.”
Harlan will play two 14th Region rivals next week, traveling to Leslie County on Tuesday and Letcher Central on Thursday.
