Eighth-grader Tanner Daniels will be representing Harlan County in the Junior Olympics in Louisville on Saturday.
“I’m really proud of Tanner. This is a huge deal to participate in the Junior Olympics,” Harlan County coach Ryan Vitatoe said. “It’s an honor you must qualify for, which means you’re one of the best of the best. Harlan County should be very proud and excited for him to compete in this race. This is history for our sport in the county.
“It’s no secret to anyone in our county that he is already one of the best to ever do it here. He certainly is gifted, but what most people never see is his dedication to this sport. He’s dedicated to how hard he trains, his diet, rest, and everything that comes with the sport. He’s one of the hardest workers and toughest competitors, I’ve ever coached. I’m super excited to watch him race in such a prestigious event tomorrow.”
Daniels will be running in the 4,000-meter run with 712 kids participating.
“How do I feel about this challenge?
This is definitely the biggest challenge I have had thus far, as far as talent,” Daniels said. “This is the biggest and fastest group I’ve raced against. Am I nervous? Sure. But is this my type of stage? Absolutely.
“My dad has always told me in order to be the best, I’ve got to beat the best. With the help and strength from God, my plan is to come out on top. But no matter the outcome I will keep pushing until I reach my goals and that is to be number one.
“What happens from tomorrow if it goes well? I like to dream big: my goal is to make it to the actual Olympics one day and run for team USA and I won’t stop until I get there.”
Daniels will run Saturday at Tom Sawyer Park in Louisville at 1:45 p.m.
