The Harlan Lady Dragons opened the season with a pair of losses to out-of-state opponents, falling 14-3 on Monday at Union, Va., and 12-4 on Tuesday at Claiborne, Tenn.
Harlan had only three hits against Union as seventh grader Jordyn Smith led the way with a double and RBI. Addison Jackson and Abbi Fields added singles.
Mallory McNiel suffered the loss in the circle as she gave up nine runs (eight earned) on six hits with one strikeouts and four walks in three innings. Smith allowed five runs (three earned) on five hits with two strikeouts and on walks in one inning.
Ella Lisenbee drove in three runs on two triples in the loss to Claiborne. Ella Farley added two singles. Ava Nunez had one single. Farley and Lisenbee each scored two runs.
McNiel gave up seven runs on seven hits in 1 1/3 innings, with one strikeout and three walks. Smith allowed five runs (two earned) on six hits with three strikeouts and one walk in 4 1/3 innings.
Harlan will play host to Claiborne, Tenn., on Thursday.
