Burton’s blast sends Lady Bears to a victory over Whitley County

Harlan County’s Jade Burton celebrated after a home run Friday in the Lady Bears’ victory over Whitley County.

Harlan County won for the fourth time in five games in an 8-5 victory Friday over visiting Whitley County.
Junior catcher Jade Burton drove in three runs with a homer and single to lead the 9-17 Lady Bears. Jenna Wilson added a double and single. Halanah Shepherd singled twice. Brittleigh Estep and Lesleigh Brown contributed one single each.
Alexis Adams gave up only one earned run on five hits with 11 strikeouts and three walks.
Harlan County will be at home on Monday against Pineville and on Tuesday against Bell County. A win over the Lady Cats would clinch the top seed in the 52nd District Tournament for HCHS.

Harlan's Lee Freyer was recently named coach of the year in the 13th Region by the 13th Region Media Network. Freyer led the Dragons to a 23-12 record this season, including Harlan's first 52nd District title since 2015. The Dragons advanced to the 13th Region Tournament semifinals before falling to eventual champ Corbin.

Harlan County freshman Zayden Casolari won the 13th Region Media Network award for most saves in the 2024. Casolari had four saves and an earned run average of 3.87 in 32 innings on the mound. He was tied for fourth in the state.

The local Appalachian Athletics Varner squad won the Battle of Eastern Kentucky over the weekend by sweeping four games.
