The Harlan Green Dragons were able to accomplish a lot with a little at the Class A Region 6 meet at Williamsburg on Tuesday. Although small in numbers, the boys were regional runners-up with 101 points, 35 points behind Williamsburg. The girls placed seventh with 14 points. Leslie County won with 183.50 points.
“Our boys team of 12 athletes managed to get second overall and almost each athlete had four events they competed in,” Harlan track coach Dakota Owens said. “I was impressed with their performances tonight and how far they have come.”
To lead the Dragons, Darius Akal won the 100-meter dash. Kyler McLendon won the 200-meter dash. Tanner Daniels won the 800- and 1,600-meter run. Akal, McLendon, Tayquan Vick and Noah Sharp won the 4 x 100-and 4 x 200-meter relay.
“Our relays had outstanding performances – 1:32.70 in the 4 x 200m,” Owens said. “They really wanted the win and they got it.”
McLendon finished second in the 100-meter dash.
Akal placed third in the 200-meter dash.
In the 400-meter dash, Sharp was fourth. Sayed Damaa placed 17th.
Gabriel Xavier Farley finished 17th in the 800-meter run and 15th in the 1,600-meter run.
Nate Montanaro placed second in the 110-meter hurdles.
Vick was third in the 300-meter hurdles.
Izack Saylor placed third in high jump.
In discus, Trenton Childers was eighth. Jordan Rodriguez placed 11th.
“Jordan had an excellent meet today with a PR throw of 96 ft as a freshman,” Owens said. “Trenton threw an impressive PR throw as well with 106 ft.”
In shot put, Childers placed sixth. Hunter Clem was 12th.
In the 4 x 400-meter relay, Vick, Montanaro, Farley and Sharp placed fifth.
To lead the Lady Dragons, Harper Carmical placed third in the 1,600-meter run and fourth in the 800-meter run.
“Harper ran a 800m PR time of 2:46. She’s a hard worker and keeps improving,” Owens said.
Emma Owens finished ninth in the 100-meter dash. Abbiegail Elliott was 26th.
Owens was ninth in the 200-meter dash.
In the 400-meter dash, Juliana Damaa placed 15th. Jenna Nguyen was 17th.
Gwendolyn Toll finished 17th in the 800-meter run and 11th in high jump.
Owens placed fifth in triple jump.
“Emma had a great triple jump of 30-6.25. She’s a hard worker and her efforts always shows on meet day,” Owens said.
In discus, Tess Bryson placed ninth. Anna Lawson was 17th.
In shot put, Asia Young was fifth. Elliott placed 16th.
The full list of individual qualifiers is not yet available pending the completion of all regional championship meets. State qualifiers will be highlighted in an upcoming article.
The KHSAA Class A State Championship will be May 30 at Lexington.
