HINDMAN — Harlan County rolled to a pair of summer wins Monday at Knott Central, defeating the host Patriots 73-43 and then coasting past Betsy Layne 81-37.
Senior guards Maddox Huff and Brody Napier led the Bears against Knott with 19 and 13 points, respectively. Reggie Cottrell tossed in 12 while Trent Cole and Jaycee Carter added nine each. Brady Freeman added a spark off the bench with six points. Brennan Blevins and Cole Cornett added three and two points, respectively.
Huff hit two early 3s and Cole added one as Harlan County grabbed a 19-6 lead. Knott scored 13 straight to pull even before a Cole basket started a 7-0 run as the Bears built a 31-21 advantage by halftime. Huff had four baskets in the second half while Cottrell added three as HCHS pulled away against one of the 14th Region’s top teams.
Huff scored 13 and Cottrell and Cole added 12 each to lead HCHS against Betsy Layne. Landon Brock scored 10. Napier, Carter and Cornett added seven each. Freeman tossed in five. Blevins and Bryson Bryant added four each.
Huff, Cole and Carter hit early 3s and Cottrell added a dunk as the Bears raced to a 16-3 lead against Betsy Layne. The Bobcats reeled off 12 unanswered points before another Huff 3 and Cottrell dunk put HCHS back in control. HCHS led 43-17 at halftime before several of the starters sat out the second half.
Brock, Cornett and Freeman teamed for seven baskets as the HCHS reserves outscored Betsy Layne 38-20 in the second half.
The 3-1 Black Bears return to action Wednesday at Clay County.

Harlan County fell 41-40 to Knott Central and won 49-25 over Betsy Layne in junior varsity action.
Sophomore guards Cole Cornett and Landon Brock led HCHS against Knott with 10 and seven points, respectively. Bryson Bryant scored six. Hayden Grace added five. Ryan Day and Brady Freeman each chipped in with four. Brady Smith and Tucker Curtis added two each.
Freshmen Thyler Coots scored 14 and Grace added 12 against Betsy Layne. Brady Smith chipped in with six. Curtis, Day and Rydge Lewis scored four each. Kayden Hensley and Logan Smith added three and two points, respectively.
