LONDON — The Harlan County Black Bears knocked off one of the top teams in the 14th Region and fell to the defending champs of the 12th Region in summer scrimmage action Monday at South Laurel High School.
Maddox Huff scored 27 points and Reggie Cottrelll added 23 as the Bears downed Breathitt County 76-64 in the opening scrimmage. Brody Napier chipped in with nine points, followed by Trent Cole with seven, Jaycee Carter with six and Brennan Blevins with four.
Breathitt grabbed a 6-2 lead before Napier, Huff and Cole each hit 3s and Cottrell added a basket in an 18-2 run that put the Bears on top.
Harlan County led 36-32 at halftime, but Breathitt star Austin Sperry scored to tie the game at 40-40. Cottrell, Huff and Napier each scored in a 12-0 run that decided the game.
Harlan County led 35-30 at halftime against Pulaski County, but the Maroons rallied in the second half. The game was tied in the final minute before Pulaski scored the final five points to win 66-61.
Huff scored 26 to lead the Bears. Cottrell added 14, followed by Napier with nine, Carter with six, Cole with four and Cole Cornett with two.
Harlan County (11-3) closes its summer schedule with the state’s biggest summer tournament over the weekend in Shelby County.
