After breaking the school records for the 1,600-meter a couple of weeks ago, Harlan County’s Hutton Sherman and Lillie Carver broke two more records on Saturday.
The elementary school runners set new school records for a 2,000-meter course at Somerset in the Southern Harrier Classic.
Sherman finished fifth with a time of 7:46.63, leading the fourth through sixth grade boys to a fifth-place finish. Carver placed fifth with a time of 8:21.62 to lead the fourth through sixth grade girls to a seventh-place finish.
“We ran a new course today and faced our toughest competition so far this season. The kids ran great, with many 2K PRs and new school records set by Lillie Carver and Hutton Sherman,” Harlan County elementary cross country coach Jennifer Brock said. “I love seeing the confidence grow in these young runners. I’m so proud of them.”
In the fourth through sixth grade boys race, Logan Mills was 24th with a time of 8:54.94, immediately followed by Brantley Burkhart (8:55.72). Other finishers for Harlan County were Jace Hensley (39th, 9:26.22), Dalton Johnson (51st, 9:53.61), Levi Hensley (58th, 10:11.81), Zakk Collins (107th, 12:43.90), Jace Howard (110th, 13:08.79), Jase Sargent (113th, 13:17.64), Jordan Sargent (114th, 13:31.86) and Jonah Doyle (116th, 13:57.03).
In the fourth through sixth grade girls race, Krislyn Clem finished 37th with a time of 10:11.61. Ella Brock (46th) finished with a time of 10:22.76. Paisleigh Asher was 75th with a time of 11:52.70, while Emily McKnight (16:37.88) placed 108th.
The kindergarten through third grade girls finished fifth overall. Bella Burkhart finished 23rd with a time of 10:47.38. Kaylyn Lawson (11:17.23) placed 34th. Ellianna Carver (36th) and Kadie Lawson (39th) finished with times of 11:20.29 and 11:28.40, respectively. Rounding out the results were Sawyer Millikan (52nd, 11:55.79), Emberlynn Miller (69th, 12:41.62), Emma Mitchell (73rd, 13:00.13), Evva Hensley (74th, 13:00.52), Landri Dagnan (77th, 13:06.50), Kellee Doyle (80th, 13:13.86), Nevaeh Stone (81st, 13:24.37), Charlotte Mitchell (85th, 13:42.83) and Caroline Collins (108th, 20:51.93).
The kindergarten through third grade boys were 11th. Tate Sherman placed sixth with a time of 8:45.11. Jonah Sargent was 54th with a time of 10:40.62. Skylar Boggs (11:14.91) and Eli McKnight (11:23.12) finished 70th and 73rd, respectively. Corben Snelling was 95th with a time of 12:37.72. Micah Lawson (117th) finished with a time of 15:05.83. Oliver Hensley placed 124th with a time of 16:58.94.
Harlan’s Harper Carmical finished 50th with a time of 23:33.74 in the girls varsity race.
Xavier Farley (22:00.73) placed 84th in the boys varsity race to pace Harlan.
“We were a little spread out yesterday and few in numbers, but as always we are very proud of our runners’ dedication and hard work,” Harlan cross country coach Anne Lindsey said. “Harper and Xavier represented our high school teams at the Southern Harrier Classic. There was a lot of good competition in this race and our runners responded well.”
In the girls middle school race, Harlan’s Priscilla Stewart finished 14th with a time of 14:10.68.
To lead Harlan, Cooper Thomas was 19th with a time of 12:55.64 in the boys middle school race.
“Priscilla and Cooper represented our middle school teams at this race. They both had great races as well,” Lindsey said. “We are looking forward to seeing all of our runners progress throughout this season, as individuals in their performances and as a team, as we work together to accomplish our team goals.”
Harlan will return to action Thursday in Harrogate, Tn.
Harlan County’s next meet will be on Saturday for the Wayne County Invitational.

Harlan’s Tanner Daniels competed in an invitational meet in Virginia on Saturday.
Daniels finished 20th with a time of 16:11.20.
“Tanner represented our team at the Knights Crossing Invitational in Virginia. He ran with other schools from several different states placing 20th out of the first 500 freshmen and achieving a significant PR,” Lindsey said. “We’re very proud of the work he’s putting in this season as well.”
