Caleb Brock (left) is expected to be a leader for this year’s Harlan County cross country team.

While focus can be a challenge for many high school athletes, that isn’t an issue for Harlan County senior Caleb Brock.
“Caleb is as invested in the sport as any kid I’ve ever coached. His training this summer has been off the charts. He’s had weeks where he’s logged 50-60 miles and every conversation he and I have together are about his goals for the season,” said Harlan County coach Ryan Vitatoe of his squad’s senior captain. “When he’s not training, he’s reading or analyzing information about training. He’s completely invested with the sport.”
“The amount of work I’ve put in this offseason has far surpassed my previous training efforts. I feel like going in I’m better prepared than ever before,” Brock said. “I’m very excited about my senior year, I’ve put a lot of work in this offseason and think I’ll be significantly more competitive this year than in years past. I really hope we have a season because I think I have a good chance at proving myself to college coaches.”
Brock is a standout in both cross country and track. He holds school records in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs and was part of the school-record 4×800 relay team.
“In addition to his work ethic, his “business-like” approach to practice and competition has set a great example for his teammates,” Vitatoe said. “He will be our captain again this season, and he is typically spot on with everything he does with his team.”
“My goal is for our team to be one of the best in the region this season,” Brock said. “I’m also striving to finish among the best at the state meet in October.”
The Black Bears are moving from 3A to 2A this season and will be one of the top teams in the new region, along with defending state champ Corbin.
“His leadership will be crucial as we transition back to 2A. We have new goals, and he will help set the example for the behaviors necessary to reach those goals,” Vitatoe said.
The HCHS cross country team is scheduled to open its season on Sept. 12 at Lynn Camp.
