The Harlan Green Dragons opened their season at Jonesville, VA in the Pepsi Five Star Invitational.
The boys finished third overall with 59 points. The girls placed fourth with 62 points.
“Last night, we saw a lot of improvements, Harlan track coach Trent McKenzie said. “This is the first year of track for about 75 percent of the team, and from the 4 x 800 girls to the boys shot put, there was nothing but improvement.”
To lead the Dragons, Izack Saylor won high jump. Saylor also placed second in triple jump and third in long jump.
In the 100-meter dash, Darius Akal finished seventh. Murtaza Hussain placed 17th.
Garrett Wilder was seventh in the 200-meter dash.
In the 400-meter dash, Garrett Wilder placed fourth. Xavier Farley was eighth.
In the 800-meter run, Cruz Galloway finished fifth. He was immediately followed by Farley.
Farley placed fourth in the 1,600-meter run.
In the 300-meter hurdles, Gibson Wilder finished third. He was immediately followed by Hussain.
In shot put, Jordan Rodriguez placed fourth. Michael Lindsey and Harlan Marietta were 13th and 14th, respectively.
Rodriguez was fifth in discus. Marietta placed 12th. Lindsey was 14th.
Gibson Wilder, Dalton Halcomb, Garrett Wilder and Noah Sharp finished second in the 4 x 200-meter relay.
Harper Carmical led the Lady Dragons, winning the 800-meter run. She also placed second in the 1,600-meter run, setting a new school record.
Carmical, Zoe Lawson, Gwendolyn Toll and Priscilla Stewart won the 4 x 800-meter relay, breaking the meet record.
In the 100-meter dash, Amy Roman placed 11th. Abbiegail Elliott finished 13th, immediately followed by Ella Cook.
Roman was eighth in the 200-meter dash. Cook placed 10th.
In the 400-meter dash, Roman finished fifth. Cook and Elliott placed eighth and 10th, respectively.
Toll was fourth in the 800-meter run. She was immediately followed by Stewart.
Stewart finished third in the 1,600-meter run.
Lawson placed third in the 3,200-meter run and the 300-meter hurdles.
Toll was ninth in high jump. Lawson placed 10th.
In shot put, Asia Young placed second. Elliott and Kamryn Blanton were seventh and 10th, respectively.
In discus, Elliott was seventh. Blanton placed 11th.
“Our kids come to practice and work hard and that’s all the coaching staff can ask,” McKenzie said.
Harlan’s next meet will be Thursday at Leslie County for an all-comers meet.
