
The Middlesboro track team competed in the E.R. “Doc” Gray Invitational on Saturday at Harlan. Both boys and girls won their divisions with 207 and 156 points, respectively.
“We are really proud of the hard work and effort from our kids. We had several athletes out for various reasons at this meet, and seeing the other kids step up to bring home team trophies on both the boys and girls side was rewarding,” Middlesboro coach Kaci Ausmus said. “We are excited to see how they perform as we head into post-season.”
Major Shirley led Middlesboro’s boys, winning the 200-meter dash. Zapriel Lopez won the 3,200-meter run. Brent Thompson won the 110- and 300-meter hurdles. Vincent Smith won long jump. Billy Choron won shot put and discus.
Smith, Deandre Lightfoot, Colby Lawson and Jacob Tinnel won the 4 x 100-meter relay.
Thompson, Tinnel, Smith and Lawson won the 4 x 200-meter relay.
To lead Middlesboro’s girls, Ava Spencer won the 100-meter dash. Thalia Partin won the 200-meter dash. Leah Spencer won the 400-meter dash. Taraji Brooks won long jump and triple jump. Abigail Appleby won discus.
Brooks, Partin, Ava Spencer and Leah Spencer won the 4 x 100-meter relay.
Partin, Ava Spencer, Alyvia Wilson and Leah Spencer won the 4 x 200-meter relay.
Harlan’s boys and girls placed second overall with 183 and 149 points, respectively.
To lead the boys, Darius Akal won the 100-meter dash. Garrett Wilder won the 400-meter dash. Tanner Daniels won the 800-meter run. Xavier Farley won the 1,600-meter run. Izack Saylor won high jump and triple jump.
Akal, Daniels, Cruz Galloway and Dalton Halcomb won the 4 x 400-meter relay.
Farley, Halcomb, Wilder and Galloway won the 4 x 800-meter relay.
Harper Carmical led the girls, winning the 800-meter run, 1,600-meter run and 3,200-meter run. Zoe Lawson won the 300-meter hurdles and high jump. Asia Young won shot put.
Lawson, Carmical, Gwendolyn Toll and Priscilla Stewart won the 4 x 800-meter relay.
Middlesboro’s next meet will be Friday at Harlan County for the Area 9 Championship. Harlan’s next meet will be Tuesday at Leslie County for an all-comers meet.
