Even though he will graduate in May, Luke Kelly’s mark on the Harlan County High School track program will likely be felt for many years.
Kelly, a two-time regional champion as a junior in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes who finished third in the state in both events last year, is all over the HCHS track record books with the top time in the 100, 200, 400, 4×100, 4×200 and 4×400. He is expected to make another deep state run this spring before moving on to the next level. He signed Wednesday with Morehead State University.
“Signing with Morehead is like a dream come true,” Kelly said. “Since the start, I could see myself on the team and being a part of the program. I loved the welcoming atmosphere, the coaching staff, and the sense of family on the team.”
“Luke leaves us as one of the best to do it in our county’s history. He’s such a hard worker, and there’s never been any doubt that he’s giving his best in anything he does,” Harlan County coach Ryan Vitatoe said. “We’re a better program in so many ways because of what he’s given us during his career. I’m so proud of him, and I can’t wait to see what he accomplishes at the next level. “
In addition to all his school records and championships, Kelly is a two-time all-state selection who will be in a position for a third before he graduates. He is also a standout on the football field as a receiver, running back, defensive back and kick returner who led the team last year in rushing and receiving yardage.
“Looking back on my high school career, I’m proud of everything I’ve accomplished,” he said. “It took a lot of hard work, but every practice, every race, and every moment was worth it. I’m thankful for the support I’ve had along the way, and I’m excited for what’s next.”
