With a new track facility, the chance to host a meet and several school records broken, the Harlan Dragons have had a successful season.
Harlan will be competing in the Class A, Region 6 track meet at Somerset on Tuesday.
Though his team is young and few in number, coach Trent McKenzie expects them to be competitive.
“I expect our team to compete,” McKenzie said. “We’ve worked all season to get to this point. Them competing is what I expect. Win or lose I want them to compete in each event.”
Senior Asia Young is expected to play a pivotal role in the Dragons’ performance on Tuesday, along with Harper Carmical, Izack Saylor, Jordan Rodriguez, Tanner Daniels and Gibson Wilder.
Young and Rodriguez have shown themselves to be talented throwers. As distance runners, Carmical has broken multiple school records and Daniels has had impressive performances. Saylor has had great success as a jumper. Wilder has been exceptional as a sprinter and hurdler.
McKenzie is also expecting the relay teams to be key contributors in the meet.
“We’ll have some individuals that will do good, but at the end I see our relay teams making huge strides,” McKenzie said.
“At the end of the day we are wanting to get as many kids to Lexington for the state meet as possible,” McKenzie said. “We are short in numbers, but we compete. It’ll, hopefully, be a great meet for the Dragons.”
