The Harlan County Black Bears were good Monday in winning three summer scrimmages at Dobyns-Bennett High School in Kingsport, Tenn. They weren’t so good Tuesday in losing three scrimmages at Leslie County.
The Bears defeated two Tennessee varsity teams Monday — North Greenville and Sullivan East. The HCHS freshmen defeated Dobyns-Bennett. No scoring information was available.
The Harlan County junior varsity team fell 68-42 to the Leslie County varsity squad Tuesday. The HCHS freshman team lost a 15-point halftime lead to fall 48-47 to Leslie.
Thyler Coots scored 17 and Hayden Grace added 15 for the Harlan County junior varsity team. Trey Creech scored four. Bryson Bryant, Tucker Curtis and Hudson Faulkner added two each.
Carson Sanders, Creech and Rydge Lewis scored nine each in the freshman game. Blake Johnson and Andrew Vance each scored six. Easton Engle tossed in five. Faulkner scored three.
Harlan County fell 62-60 in overtime in varsity action Tuesday. The Black Bears led 29-25 at halftime but fell behind behind 54-43 in the second half before battling back to pull even at 58 to force overtime.
Junior guard Trent Cole hit four 3-pointers to spark the late comeback and finished with 25 points. Senior guard Reggie Cottrell scored 13. Brennan Blevins tossed in eight points, followed by Brady Smith with six, Kaden Jones with five and Landon Brock with three.
Harlan County (7-2) will travel to Lindsey Wilson College on Thursday.
