Uncertain if they would even be able to have a season due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Middlesboro Lady Jackets and coach Kristen Brock didn’t have a lot of time for preparation.
The Lady Jackets were able to learn on the run, posting an 8-1 mark in a season that concluded Saturday at Lynn Camp with an All A Conference fifth- and sixth-grade championship.
“Due to the pandemic, we didn’t get a lot of time to work with the girls before the season began. However, that didn’t stop them from wanting to be in the gym and put in the extra work that was missed,” Brock said. “We have a great group of girls that gives 110 percent in every practice and every game. Our defense won us a lot of games this season. I couldn’t be more proud of them and their effort. We are looking forward to our next season and are eager to get started.”
Morgan Martin scored seven points to lead Middlesboro to a 19-6 win over Pineville in the semifinals.
Millie Roberts and Morgan Martin each scored five as Middlesboro edged Williamsburg 14-10 in the championship game.
Williamsburg advanced with a 30-21 win over Harlan.
Harper Carmical poured in 16 to lead the Lady Dragons, who finished the season with a 5-4 record.
The pairings have been set for the All A Conference seventh- and eighth-grade tournament at Pineville. Middlesboro (4-5) will play Barbourville (0-9) on Monday at 6 p.m. Williamsburg (4-6) will take on Lynn Camp (3-4) at 7:15 p.m.
