The taste of home cooking has been the recipe for success this week for the Harlan County High School boys soccer team.
Led by a four-goal performance by junior Luther Gross, coach Tommy Key’s Black Bears recorded their second shutout of the week at James A. Cawood Elementary School field, this time with an 8-0 victory over Knox Central. HCHS is 2-1 on the young season.
Gross, who has scored eight goals through the team’s first three games, also added an assist.
Freshman goalkeeper Wesley Green and sophomore Christion Smith combined for the shutout. Greene was credited with two saves, and Smith was not called upon to make a single save thanks to the staunch defensive effort by the Black Bears.
Senior Trevor Farley opened the scoring with a penalty kick and later added an assist. Freshman Mason Howard added a goal and an assist, while freshman Bryson Robbins, and sophomore Haydin Palmer also scored for the Black Bears. Sophomore Dustin Pendergrass also chipped in with an assist.
The Black Bears travel to Middleboro on Tuesday for an 8:30 p.m. match against the rival Yellow Jackets.
