The Harlan County elementary cross country teams traveled to Somerset on Saturday to compete in the Cougar Prowl Invitational.
The fourth-grade through sixth-grade girls finished fifth overall.
The kindergarten through third-grade girls placed sixth.
The fourth-grade through sixth-grade boys were seventh.
The kindergarten through third-grade boys finished 10th.
“It was so hot, but it didn’t slow us down. These kids truly amaze me. They work so hard all week and today I believe they gave it all they had,” Harlan County elementary cross country coach Jennifer Brock said. “I love watching them push to the finish. They never give up.”
Hutton Sherman led the fourth-grade through sixth-grade boys, finishing fifth overall with a time of 7:49.17. Dalton Johnson placed 44th with a time of 9:40.19. Jonah Sargent (50th) finished with a time of 9:47.86. Rounding out the results were Jonah Doyle (62nd, 10:08.82), Zack Daniels (71st, 10:30.52), Skylar Boggs (77th, 10:56.20) and Jase Sargent (89th, 11:51.27).
Ella Brock led the fourth-grade through sixth-grade girls, placing 12th with a time of 9:15.48. Bella Burkhart finished 25th with a time of 10:14.32. Krislyn Clem (10:27.61) and Adalynn Shackleford (10:45.63) were 30th and 33rd, respectively. Isabella Burkhart was 55th with a time of 12:23.48. Nevaeh Stone (63rd) and Peyton Sherman (67th) finished with times of 13:18.04 and 14:15.55, respectively.
To pace the kindergarten through third-grade girls, Kaylyn Lawson finished 14th with a time of 10:36.21. Kadie Lawson (12:10.05) and Emma Mitchell (12:19.61) placed 39th and 41st, respectively. Ava Williams (50th) and Emma Cooper (52nd) finished with times of 12:59.10 and 13:13.12, respectively. Brooklyn Johnson finished 59th with a time of 13:37.25.
To lead the kindergarten through third-grade boys, Jett Lee placed 26th with a time of 9:56.78. Blue Day was 67th with a time of 11:28.13. Jaxon Mclain (76th) finished with a time of 11:51.50. Braxton Rigney (13:44.11) and Oliver Hensley (14:01.43) were 101st and 104th, respectively.
Harlan County’s last two meets were in Boyle County before today’s meet in Somerset.
“I have to give a shout out to our parents. We have traveled over two hours for the past three weekends and I know what kind of sacrifice that is,” Brock said. “There is something very special about the Black Bear cross country family and I’m so thankful that to be a part of it.”
The Harlan County elementary team will return to action Saturday at home in the Bob Howard Invitational/Area 9 Championships.
The varsity squads will compete in the Morgan County Sorghum Run on Wednesday at Morgan County.
