The Harlan cross country team traveled to Somerset on Saturday to compete in an invitational meet.
The boys placed eighth overall.
“Harlan High School had a great race today in Somerset,” Harlan cross country coach Erin Alred said.
Dalton Halcomb placed 28th with a time of 19:56.68 to lead the boys. Cooper Thomas (41st) and Gibson Wilder (48th) finished with times of 20:41.65 and 20:53.74, respectively. Garrett Wilder was 59th with a time of 21:27.82. Cruz Galloway (23:35.97) and Xavier Farley (23:51.32) were 74th and 76th, respectively.
“The Harlan boys team had some major gains today. They all finished under 24 minutes. We are knocking seconds and sometimes minutes off each race and continue to perform,” Alred said. “Dalton, Cooper and Garrett had huge PRs today. Dalton finally reached under 20:00. Cooper keeps pushing towards his goal of sub-20:00. And Garrett, our senior, has grown so much over this season. He has cut minutes off his time every week.”
Harper Carmical finished fifth with a time of 22:38.22 to pace the girls. Gwendolyn Toll (31:03.46) placed 42nd. Salena Amro was 56th with a time of 43:17.27. The HHS girls didn’t compete as a team.
“Harper Carmical finished fifth for the girls,” Alred said. “She is working hard towards her goal for another state appearance.”
“We are so proud of all of our runners today. As we head into the end of our season, we believe that our team is peaking at the right time,” Alred said. “We can’t wait to see how they show up in a few weeks at region.”
Harlan’s elementary and middle school teams will compete Monday at Lynn Camp in the 13th Region Elementary and Middle School Championships.
Harlan’s varsity teams will return to action Oct. 14 to compete in the SEKC Championships at Williamsburg.
