Middle school basketball season opens with three games

After a two-month delay due to coronavirus concerns, the county middle school basketball season opened Monday with three seventh- and eighth-grade games at James A. Cawood Elementary School.
Leah Davis scored 19 points as the defending champion Trojanettes rolled past Black Mountain 37-14 in the opener.
Whitley Teague scored 10 as Wallins knocked off Evarts 31-17.
Cawood overcame a slow start to defeat Cumberland 37-19 in the final game. Cheyenne Rhymer poured in 25 points to lead the Comets.
Three fifth- and sixth-grade games are set for Tuesday at JACES, beginning at 6 p.m. with Cumberland taking on Wallins. Evarts will play James A. Cawood and Black Mountain will take on Rosspoint in other games
