Limited to only three hits, the visiting Jackson County Generals made the most of their opportunities in a 5-0 win Thursday at Harlan in the finals of the 13th Region All “A” Classic.
Jackson’s Ashton Clemons and Harlan’s Baylor Varner traded zeroes for four innings before a lengthy break in the action due to accident on the Harlan bypass that stopped play due to a helicopter landing on the field to transport an injured person.
Jackson scored two runs in the fifth inning and three in the seventh to claim the win.
Clemens led the 4-1 Generals with a two-run double and also earned the win on the mound as he gave up only three hits over 4 2/3 innings with eight strikeouts and three walks. Elijah Thomas earned a save as he gave up no hits or walks over 2 1/3 innings, with five strikeouts. Dylan Gay and Tansen Truett added one single each.
Varner, Chris Rouse and Eli Freyer had one hit each for the Dragons.
Each team had a scoring opportunity early. Rouse led off with a double for the Dragons in the third inning and took third on a wild pitch. The Dragons tried to squeeze in a run, but Braxton Bowen’s bunt went back to Clemons who threw home to retire Rouse. Bowen was then picked off first to end the threat.
The Generals loaded the bases with one out in the fourth with the help of an error, a hit and walk. Varner struck out the next two hitters to work out of trouble.
Harlan (4-2) will play host to Williamsburg on Saturday.
