One of the 13th Region’s top pitchers, Harlan senior Baylor Varner did his part through eight innings to keep the Dragons in a game Friday at Letcher Central despite a lack of offense and a bad night defensively.

Letcher capitalized on the fourth and fifth Harlan errors of the night, scoring a run with two outs in the ninth inning to win 2-1.

Mason Boggs reached on a dropped pop up with one out in the ninth, took second on a hit by Jaden Amburgey and then scored when he stole third base and the throw from the catcher got past the Harlan infielder.

Varner gave up only four hits while striking out 17 and walking none through 8 2/3 innings.

Jude Yonts, an eighth grader, gave up one run on four hits over six innings. Dylan Eldridge, a sophomore, earned the win as he allowed two hits over three shutout innings.

Jaxson Perry and Varner each had two hits for the 5-4 Dragons. Brody Owens had a triple.

Harlan returns to action Monday at Whitley County.
